Introducing the new Authentic Jobs, completely retooled
What began over Christmas break in 2007 culminates today with a completely retooled Authentic Jobs. Thanks to the noble efforts of Myles Grant, Ben Bodien, Jeff Croft, Jon Linczak, Aaron Cannon, Jake Spurlock, our listing partners, and feedback from many of you, I’m proud to announce some of the new features we finally unveil today. A few guest authors and I will talk about these features and changes in the coming weeks, but for now here’s a brief digest.
Realigned identity
A number of attempts to realign and revitalize the Authentic Jobs identity led to what you see today: a color scheme that’s both a departure from and medley of the previous identity, and a logo that employs Alejandro Paul’s beautiful Calgary Script to give the company a more humanistic, brandable feel.

While I’m still very much a fan of Silas Dilworth’s Diego typeface, this revised logo provides better opportunities for brand awareness across mediums—print, apparel, mobile apps, and so forth. You’ll see examples of this soon.
Better searching and filtering
Those of you seeking work will appreciate sifting through the available listings with filters for employment type, category, location, company name, and keyword.
- Search by location, company, keyword, or listing description.
- New categories include the distinction between Interaction and Graphic Design, and we’ve added Mobile and Management.
- Twitter, email, and RSS subscriptions allow you to be notified of matching listings whenever and however you choose.
More compelling listings
For employers, we’ve added several new features that allow you to craft your listing in a way that best showcases your company.
- Full-time listings stay active for 60 days instead of 30 days
- Add your company logo for brand exposure
- Format your text with bolding, italics, bullets, and links
- Use twice as much text in your description, how to apply, and perks fields
- Post as a confidential company if you’re not prepared to reveal your company name and website
- Choose from 5 categories of job types, and select up to two for your listing
- Indicate relocation assistance if you offer applicants a relocation package as incentive
- Anonymize your email address using one of ours (e.g. 3192@jobs.authenticjobs.com) and we’ll reduce the amount of applicant spam you receive
Not only have we added all of these new features, but we’ve done it in a way that keeps the listing process as simple and as quick as possible—something that has remained a top priority for us since day one.
100% satisfaction guaranteed, as always
Since 2005, we’ve offered our unconditional money-back guarantee. If you post a job with us and you’re not 100% satisfied with the results from your listing, request a full refund within 30 days after your listing expires. Easy peasy.
Post a job and give it shot. You’ve got nothing to lose, literally.
Still tinkering under the hood
While we’ve done our best to make sure the site is as polished as possible, we still expect (and are aware of) some issues with bugs and user experience. We’ve set up a customer support community on Get Satisfaction. Please help us continue to polish the site by leaving feedback, ideas, complaints, whatever. You’re welcome to post remarks here too, or send us a note.
I love it when a plan comes together. Hope you enjoy the new site.

Everything about the redesign is fantastic. Authentic Jobs outgrew its old digs a while back and I knew you’d be working to fix that eventually. I love the interaction details and the new features as well as the much improved filtering.
Nice work, Cameron. I too love it when a plan comes together, especially when it looks this good.
PS. I just noticed that the tab order on this page is not quite right. If I tab out of this textarea, I jump up to the Search the Blog text input, then to my browser’s location bar, Google bar, then back down to the Name field below. All in Safari 4, if you’re wondering.

w00t! Looks fantastic.

I really love the new design – stunning! However, I wish there wasn’t a “Company Confidential” option. One thing I always loved about AJ is that it was to the point and the listings were always credible, partly because you knew who was posting the job in the first place. My fear is now that you offer that option that some of the postings will appear questionable. My first reaction when I see “company confidential” is “I don’t really want to apply for a company that I can’t research. I could be applying as a designer for Starbucks or for Joe’s Gun and Tackle Shop… Granted I could always decline the offer/interview if they get in touch with me, but still…
Daniel 4 November 2009
I wanted to add that I found my current job using AJ…
Tuomas Tolppi 4 November 2009
Wow! Didn’t see this coming. Looking absolutely fantastic.
Cameron Moll 4 November 2009
@ Patrick Haney: Good catch, Patrick. I’ll take care of that.
@ Daniel: You bring up a valid point, and it’s something I’ve considered. In the end, I feel the option is needed, as we’ve had customers request or “hack” their listings to do the same. But I’m the same way — I won’t apply unless I know what company it is. Employers that receive few applicants because of this will hopefully be encouraged to reconsider.
And glad to hear you found your current job through the site! Care to provide a testimonial? Send me a contact form note.

Congratulations!

What I love is that you kept the classic red you had in your previous designs as highlights in this new one. Just lovely. :)

New design is very slick and good but I have a problem with default body background color. I’m using #101010 as my default browser background color, and as a result I’m seeing the comments and half of the page with black background :(

Cameron Moll 5 November 2009
That needs fixing, for sure. Which browser is this, Bilal?
Bilal Çınarlı 5 November 2009
Firefox 3.5.4
Emil Nikov 5 November 2009
Just plain awesome! Love it.
Cameron Moll 5 November 2009
@ Bilal Thanks, we’ll take a look at this.
Bilal Çınarlı 5 November 2009
np at all, since I’m not using default background settings as white, i have similar problems with other site :(
it seems changing
html { background: url(”../img/masthead-bg.jpg”) repeat-x; }
as
html { background: #fff url(”../img/masthead-bg.jpg”) repeat-x; }
will solve the problem :)

Love the design, love the logo work. I’m with Daniel above in my hesistation at the inclusion of the “Company Confidential” option. The rich-ish text also bugs me (and to much lesser extent the inclusion of the company logo).
I’ve always appreciated the simple, easy-to-read, consistent-across-postings presentation on AJ. I’m a-feared this combination starts to melt things toward Monster and its ilk.
Perhaps there are view options to “don’t include confidential companies”, and maybe even “view as plain text”. Many of my colleagues only email in plain text, and are loathe to read any rich text email. So perhaps some user control mitigates this, as I’m sure you’ve heard many companies that can’t get by without bolding, italicizing, and underlining those key buzzwords. ;)

Ofcourse this is another great work from you.
I didn’t knew you send email newsletters as well?? Where can I subscribe? ( Saw the email on campaign monitor site)
Cameron Moll 11 November 2009
@ R.bhavesh: Currently we send newsletters only to employers who post listings. Perhaps we’ll have a general email list in the future for anyone interested in following Authentic Jobs updates.
