Media Matters for America — a progressive nonprofit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media — seeks a Digital Design Associate to help carry out its mission as a member of the Digital Department. This is an entry-level position and is based in our Washington, D.C. office. Applicants must be prepared to relocate if they do not live within commuting distance of downtown D.C.

 

Role Summary:

Digital Design Associate at Media Matters for America is responsible for designing original graphics, illustrations, and charts. S/he works directly with the Design Manager and other members of the Digital Team to create digital content and elevate Media Matters’ research.

 

Reporting Structure:

  • The Digital Design Associate reports to the Design Manager.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Graphics/Illustrations:  The Digital Design Associate works with the Design Manager to create original graphics and illustrations to accompany Media Matters’ content. S/he helps to create effective content for distribution in Media Matters’ website, social media spaces, and other platforms.
  • Charts:  The Digital Design Associate creates charts for research counting projects, in order to present data in a more digestible format for the website and social media audience.

 

Secondary Responsibilities:

  • Tumblr:  Assists the Digital Department in posting to Media Matters’ Tumblr page, in accordance with Media Matters’ overall social media strategy.
  • Video: Assist Design Manager with creation of graphics for video.
  • Ads: Assist Design Manager with designs for print and web ads.
  • Website Redesign: Assist Design Manager with tasks related to our website redesign.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Graphic design knowledge and experience
  • Ability to create compelling illustrations, charts, etc.
  • Experience creating content for online and print spaces
  • Strong illustration skills, both representative and conceptual
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Understanding of U.S. media and how conservative misinformation affects our public debate.
  • Multi-tasker with a keen attention to detail and the ability to prioritize.
  • Strong Communication Skills
  • Powerful storyteller who can break complex ideas down into digestible and effective social media content.
  • Ability to identify and empathize with a variety of audiences, including those on mobile-facing social networks, and outside of D.C.
  • Skilled at relaying information accurately and without error.
  • Self-starter who can excel both independently and in a team setting.
  • Can execute duties in a timely manner and quickly adapt to new challenges in a fast-paced media environment.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Illustration experience
  • Experience with social media execution, either for personal or professional purposes.
