WordPress Theme Developer


– Accepting applications


Position Objective:


To build and maintain the organization’s WordPress sites and support other applications and integrations.




Primary Responsibilities and Duties:


• In consultation with the PETA Foundation and its supported organizations and verified compliance with the objectives, standards, and requirement communicated by them:


o Work with designers, project managers, stakeholders and other developers to take projects from the design phase to functional application


o Create well structured WordPress themes with performance in mind that are easy to maintain and build on


o Collaborate on creative solutions to user interface and technical challenges


o Troubleshoot and fix browser inconsistencies, user problems, and javascript errors


o Optimize websites for mobile users, including supporting AMP and Facebook Instant Articles


o Recommend and initiate improvements to existing sites, operating procedures, and use of technology


o Serve as a primary point of contact for WordPress technical queries


o Follow WordPress development, recommending any changes needed for upcoming releases


• Assist in the creation and maintenance of development-related standard operating procedures


• Document work and develop necessary support documents or assist the team with development documentation


• Communicate well and coordinate work with a distributed team


• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor






• Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent work experience


• Minimum of five years of related experience in website development roles


• Demonstrated experience developing WordPress themes from scratch


• Demonstrated experience providing creative solutions in an agile environment


• Regular contributions to the WordPress Community (Support Forum, Documentation, etc.)


• Extensive experience with the following technologies:


o WordPress coding standards and best practices


o WordPress theme development


o PHP, HTML5, CSS/SASS, javascript


o Front-end build tools (Gulp, npm scripts, etc.)


o Responsive frameworks (Foundation, Bootstrap, etc.)


o Using WordPress as a CMS, knowledge of core actions & filters


• Demonstrated experience using GitHub in a distributed development environment


• Knowledge of best practices for accessibility, performance, and responsive design


• Proven success as a Web developer


• Familiarity with the following technologies/programs/platforms is helpful:


o BuddyPress


o WooCommerce


o Gutenberg and Gutenberg Block Development


o Any of the following: React, Angular, Vue.js, or similar JavaScript frameworks


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills


• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
