Description

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (a public sector agency in Boston, MA) seeks a Front End Web Developer to design and construct user interfaces for web applications and digital tools intended to help create a more sustainable and equitable region. This position is part of our Digital Services team, a group with a diverse portfolio of successful products (https://www.mapc.org/learn/data-tools/) designed to engage diverse stakeholders, visualize complex information, improve planning processes, and modernize municipal operations. The topics we address include housing, transportation, public health, social equity, clean energy, economic development, and many other issues of concern to the region’s communities.

In this position, you will work in a collaborative, respectful environment using modern web technologies and open source frameworks. This position is part of MAPC’s Data Services Department, a team of planners, analysts, researchers, programmers, and IT professionals dedicated to using data and technology to support informed decision-making.

As MAPC’s front end developer, you will contribute front end design and development to new and improved web applications for internal and external clients. As part of a small, interdisciplinary group, you will be involved in all aspects of the product delivery cycle and will have the opportunity to engage directly with partners and clients to develop valuable relationships with municipal planners, government officials, community members, and other technologists. Examples of Duties

 

  • Design and build data-driven web services within a multidisciplinary team
  • Collaborate with government staff & municipal planning professionals to invent, implement, and deploy systems and improvements to existing technology.
  • Drive ideas from concept to production: from sketches & wireframing to implementation and production
  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to design and implement clear, accessible (A11Y) user interfaces for web applications using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

 

Typical Qualifications

 

  • Experience designing consumer-facing web services for use by diverse audiences
  • Demonstrated proficiency with web markup, including HTML and CSS
  • Deep understanding of web and mobile user interface design and best practices
  • Proficient in JavaScript and familiar with front-end frameworks such as Ember or React
  • Experience with open-source version control, preferably using Git and GitHub
  • Experience with data visualization libraries such as d3.js
  • Experience working with geospatial data (geoJSON, Shapefiles) and geospatial software tools (Carto/Mapbox/Mapzen/Leaflet/PostGIS/QGIS/ArcMap)
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Experience with test-driven development or behavior-driven development practices is preferred
  • Experience refactoring legacy codebases and ability to iterate in working code is preferred
  • Experience designing and implementing web services/APIs is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience applying cartographic design principles to digital products is preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Technology, Interactive Design, Human Computer Interaction, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Studies or a related field is preferred

 

Supplemental Information

Compensation
This is a full time exempt position.  The starting salary ranges from $65,000 to $75,000 annually depending on qualifications and experience. MAPC offers excellent Massachusetts state employee benefits as well as a flexible, supportive, and family-friendly work environment.
